Page Drafts

Page Drafts is a powerful feature designed to streamline the editing and publishing workflow for your team. This feature allows multiple team members to work on different versions of the same page without interfering with each other's work.

What are Page Drafts?

Page Drafts enable you to create and maintain different versions of a page for testing, feedback, or review purposes. Each draft is a separate version of the page that can be modified independently of others. This is particularly useful when:

  • Multiple team members need to work on the same page
  • You want to experiment with different designs or content arrangements
  • You need to prepare updates ahead of time without affecting the live page
  • You want to gather feedback on different versions before publishing

Using Page Drafts

Accessing Page Drafts

To access the Page Drafts feature:

  1. Navigate to the page you want to edit in the Customizer
  2. Look for the Drafts dropdown menu in the top left corner of the interface

Available Drafts

The dropdown menu displays all available drafts for the current page:

  • Primary Draft: This is the main version of the page
  • Custom Drafts: Additional versions created by you or your team members

Creating a New Draft

To create a new draft:

  1. Make your desired changes to the page
  2. When saving, instead of clicking the Save button, click the dropdown arrow next to it
  3. Select "Save as a new draft"
  4. Enter a title and a unique handle for your draft
  5. Click "Save"
  6. You will now be in the new draft and the dropdown will show the new draft as the active draft

Each draft requires both a title and a unique handle for identification purposes.

Switching Between Drafts

To switch between different drafts:

  1. Click the Drafts dropdown menu in the top left corner
  2. Select the draft you want to view or edit

When you switch to a different draft, you'll see that particular version of the page loaded in the Customizer and the dropdown will show the new draft as the active draft.

Editing Drafts

Each draft can be edited independently:

  1. Select the draft you want to edit from the Drafts dropdown
  2. Make your changes to the page
  3. Save your changes to update that specific draft

Your changes will only affect the currently selected draft, leaving other drafts unchanged.

Publishing Drafts

When you're ready to make a draft live:

  1. Find the draft you want to publish from the Drafts dropdown
  2. Click the "Set draft as primary" button
  3. Select the draft you want to publish, that is now the primary draft, if not already selected
  4. Review the draft to ensure it's ready for publication
  5. Click the "Publish" button in the upper right corner

The selected draft will replace the live version of the page.

Benefits of Page Drafts

  • Collaborative Workflow: Multiple team members can work on different versions simultaneously
  • Risk-Free Experimentation: Test new designs and content approaches without affecting the live page
  • Streamlined Review Process: Create drafts specifically for review and feedback
  • Version Control: Maintain different versions of a page for various purposes
  • Efficient Publishing: Quickly switch between different prepared versions as needed

Page Drafts simplify content management, especially in team environments where coordination and collaboration are essential to your workflow.
